Let me introduce the man behind Mazaraat Artisan Organic cheese in Yogya. He is Mas Jamie, such a humble, fun, kind, interesting, smart and creative person.
Why cheese? I asked. And Why French Cheese?
Unexpected answer I got from him and his wife why they made organic cheese from the first time. It wasn’t because the business aspect, but the health aspect.
Back then in 2011, their daughter was diagnosed with a problem with her heart. And one of the dietary meal she should take suggested by the doctor was fermented food. Of course locally we have tofu, tempe, and tape (fermented cassava and/or sticky rice). But what else? I mean, there’s gotta be something else for other option. That’s when they came up with : Why don’t we try cheese?
To get real cheese made of pure milk, the only option was to buy imported product. And it’s pricey. So they decided to make their own cheese. They went to New Zealand to learn about milk production, then flew to France to learn about cheese making.
First product they made was fresh cheese Halloumi and Mozarella. Because it only needs few hours to make it. And then they make Camembert and Brie, the creamy soft cheese with mild flavor that can be easily accepted by local tounge. With a purpose to introduce the taste bud with this organic cheese. And yes, they just love it.
Seeing the opportunity of selling local Cheese with Original taste, they expand the production to other kind of cheese. Now they more than 10 kind of cheeses available in their production.
Now Mazaraat known as cheese supplier for some hotel chain, and even last week has been invited by Marina Bay Sand Hotel Singapore, to do cheese presentation in front of Hotel Chefs, considering taking Mazaraat as their cheese supplier, as their concern about Carbon Footprint. So proud of Mazaraat!
Mas Jamie nd Mbak Nieta are an example of strong willing, commitment, consistency, and hard work. Way to go guys!!
