As per the belief, Lord Vishnu had saved a helpless elephant from the clutches of a crocodile. Unable to bear the pain from the bite of the crocodile, the elephant held a lotus in its trunk and prayed Lord Vishnu to get rescued from the jaws of the alligator. Elephant’s prayers had moved Lord Vishnu. He cut down the head of the crocodile by his Sudarshan Chakra to rescue the elephant. According to mythology, both the crocodile and the elephant got salvation. The elephant was a king and ardent devotee of Lord Vishnu in his earlier birth. Because of a curse he had taken birth as a pachyderm. Similarly the crocodile was also a cursed Gandharva. By getting killed by Lord Vishnu, he attained salvation.
