Traditional Buffalo Race

Unique to Bali's Jembrana region, Makepung Lampit puts its own spin on drag racing. The vehicle is a water buffalo, the track a flooded rice field. Makepung means "to chase". In the makepung tradition, each two-wheeled carriage is pulled by a pair of buffalo which are decorated as attractively as possible. This tradition was carried out a long time ago when farmers spent their spare time. This makepung tradition is held usually from July to November. There are several circuits that are often used as a traditional buffalo racing arena, such as in Delod Berawah, Kaliakah, and Pangkung Dalem.
