What is Safdarjung Tomb? Safdarjung Tomb was built by his son Shujaud Daula in 1754. It is among the best tourist places in Delhi and also among the top historical places in Delhi city. This Tomb is dedicated to Mirza Muqeem Abdul-Mansur Khan, who was also known as Safdarjung. He was the viceroy of Oudh under Muhammad Shah and prime minister under Ahmad Shah. The tomb is the last example of the pattern which began with Humayun's tomb. An Ethiopian architect created the architectural style of the Safdarjung Tomb. The monument was built on an elevated ground and surrounded by a large square-shaped garden. The square garden measures 280 metres or 920 feet.The tomb was constructed using red and brownish-yellow sandstoneThe tomb has a nine-fold plan consisting of numerous rooms and libraries. The facade and the central dome somewhat give it a resemblance to the Taj Mahal. Four octagonal towers surround the tomb. It has several smaller pavilions with evocative names like Jangli Mahal, (Palace in the woods), Moti Mahal (Pearl Palace) and Badshah Pasand (King's favourite). The complex also has a madarsa. The archaeological Survey of India maintains a library over the main gateway. How to go? The nearest metro station to the Safdarjung tomb is the Jor Bagh metro station from where it takes only about 3 minutes to reach the tomb.
