The tea is distinct from other Indian black teas such as Assam, as it is made using a different tea plant variety. While most Indian teas are made using the tea plant known as Camellia sinensis var. 📍Darjeeling has only 87 Tea Gardens which are spread over seven valleys that cover the Darjeeling Hills. The Darjeeling Tea Estates produce approximately 9.6 million Kgs of tea each year. Darjeeling Tea has a unique taste which can be attributed to its climate, soil, slope, mountain mist, and rain. 📍Darjeeling Tea is the only tea in the world to get protection under the Geographical Indication (GI) trademark. It is said that these teas are the highest elevation produced teas world over and it is the altitude that creates an ideal environment for the tea plant. 📍Camellia sinensis was first planted in the Darjeeling area in 1841 by Archibald Campbell who was working for the East India Company in this jungle-covered, sparsely-populated area to develop a hill station for use by the British stationed in Kolkata. The tea garden is operating since 1850s and currently owned by Sanjay Bansal. It is located at north Kurseong area with elevation ranging from 950-1450 meters. The estate covers an area of 340 hectares and employs over 900 workers.
