Basically the festival is associated with the worship of lord Shiva. A high pole of tree, known as Charak tree, is erected high in the ground and devotees are suspended from the tree using iron hooks, that are pierced in the skin of the devotees and string. Some devotees even pierce their tongue using iron rods. They believe that it will help them to reach salvation. The other activities include lying on bed of nails, standing on nails, walking on fire etc.
