Historical Elevator
📍İzmir
Historical elevator is located in İzmir, the pearl of the Aegean region.
The height difference between Mithatpaşa Street and Halil Rıfat Paşa Street was 58 meters. Pedestrian access between the two settlements was provided by the 155-step street ladder, which the Muslim population called the "Karataş Staircase" and the Jews called the "Devidas Ladder" because of the house of the Devidas Family, which was at the top.
After the head of the Devidas Family fell on the stairs one day and broke his leg, Nesim Levi Bayraklıoğlu, a close friend of the Devidas Family and living on the coast, had the historical elevator built to facilitate pedestrian access between the two settlements.
Today, it is used by the Izmir Metropolitan Municipality as a place of entertainment, culture and recreation. The elevator is in working condition today and welcomes its visitors with its top floor cafeteria and a small viewing balcony, with a unique view.
