Tulungagung Regency, East Java, is rich in historical heritage of the archipelago kingdom. One of the historical relics of the Nusantara kingdom in Tulungagung which has been renovated and used as a tourist spot is the Cungkup Temple or Sanggrahan Temple which is a temple heritage of the Majapahit Kingdom.
Sanggrahan Temple is located in Sanggrahan Village, Boyolangu District, Tulungagung Regency. The temple was built during the reign of Hayam Wuruk and was used as a resting place for the royal entourage who carried the body of Rajapatni Dyah Gayatri, consort of the first king of Majapahit, Raden Wijaya. The body was taken from Sanggrahan Temple to Gayatri Temple where Rajapatni Dyah Gayatri's body was buried.
It is said that during his lifetime, Rajapatni Dyah Gayatri had a significant role in the development of Buddhism during the Majapahit Kingdom. Being a devout nun in carrying out her beliefs, Rajapatni Dyah Gayatri was highly respected and respected by royal figures and religious leaders at that time.
Sanggrahan temple has a lot of reliefs on animal symbols at the foot of the temple, mainly the lion symbol. The myth is that the lion relief on the temple is a sign that Rajapatni Dyah Gayatri is the daughter of King Kertanegara Singasari. In addition, there are other buildings such as places of worship around the temple.
Apart from being a historical tourist spot, Sanggrahan Temple is also used as a place to learn and introduce the history of the Majapahit Kingdom heritage. Visitors who come only need to pay a vehicle storage fee of IDR 3,000 for two-wheeled vehicles and IDR 5,000 for four-wheeled vehicles. This tour is open every day from 08.00 - 15.00 WIB.
Road access to the location is quite easy. From the center of Tulungagung City or from Gayatri Terminal, take a trip to the south, more precisely towards Boyolangu District. Then you just have to follow the signposts.
Even though Sanggrahan Temple was known as a guesthouse, resting place, or "hotel" for the Majapahit royal family at that time, but around the Sanggrahan Temple location there were no hotels provided for you.
If you are tourists who come from outside the city and want to stay in Tulungagung, then please return to the city center and visit Front One Hotel Tulungagung on Jl. Prince Antasari No.1, Kenayan, Tulungagung, at a rate of IDR 300,000 – 400,000.
For business snacks, there is a coffee shop belonging to the caretaker around the tourist area. For those of you who want to enjoy the sensation of simple coffee brewing in the Sanggrahan Temple area, it is enough to spend only IDR 3,000 - 8,000. Visitors who come are allowed to bring their own food and drinks.
