Our lady of hope church The story of the Church of Our Lady of Hope’s architecture is almost that used to describe the churches in Benaulim, Varca or Corturim, which are the same type and have almost the same volume and façade. The church was founded by the Jesuits and completed in 1590. It comprises a main prayer room, long and wide, with a false transept and tile-roofed nave. There are no side chapels. At an undetermined date in the early 18th century a new chancel was built, of the more modern type introduced in Old Goa and Margao after 1650: barrel vault with penetrations and sides articulated by semicircular shell niches. Like its counterparts, the façade is divided into three sections, with two slightly set-back towers. The crown over the central section (a polygonal oculus, rope-shaped ornament) was redone or redecorated and on the towers is a third order with cupolas and skylights. What distinguishes the Chinchinim church is the low and extended appearance of the façade, which seems like a reclining rather than upright rectangle, as well as each of its constituent parts. In front of the west-facing church is a large courtyard whose south and west sides are lined with stately houses, probably 19th century. The cemetery, also from that period, is independently located north of the church and courtyard. The village and its most important house, belonging to the Loiola Pereiras, are situated south of the church.
