James Prinsep was one such man. He was the founding editor of the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bengal, an architect, an accomplished linguist and numismatic. And his last two skills have immortalized him as who ultimately deciphered the Kharosthi and Ashokan Brahmi script of ancient India. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ In 1837 he deciphered the last two words of the Sanchi inscription as 'Danam (donation)' and revealed that the inscriptions and edicts spread all over India were done on the orders of a king named 'Devanampiya Piyadasi'; Piyadasi was the epithet of Emperor Ashoka. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀ Just like Delhiwallas have their Ugrasen Baoli featured in a movie, this monument was the backdrop of the melodious 'Piyu Bole' from Parineeta featuring Saif Ali Khan and @balanvidya.
