JAJAGHU TEMPLE
📍Kecamatan Tumpang
Candi Jago is located in Jago Hamlet, Tumpang Village, Tumpang District, Malang Regency, 22 km east of Malang City. Jago comes from the Sanskrit word Jajaghu which means greatness. Not too far from Candi Jago, which is about 5 km south of Candi Kidal. Kidal Temple is a temple dedicated to the 2nd king of Majapahit, Anusapati.
According to the Negarakertagama and Pararaton books, the construction of Jago Temple was ordered by Kertanegara, the last king of Singosari in 1268 AD to 1280 AD. This temple was built as a tribute to the 4th king of Singosari, Ranggawuni or who is famous with the title Sri Jaya Wisnuwardhana who died in 1268 AD. At this time the kingdom of Singosari experienced glory, because the residents of the kingdom experienced peace.
Jago Temple is often also called the Tumpang Temple. The naming of the Tumpang, according to Mr. Mulyanto, the caretaker of Candi Jago, is because the location of the land where Candi Jago is located is indeed at an altitude, so the Temple rides at an altitude. Candi Jago has a relief of Padma (lotus) sticking up from the hump, which adorns the placemats of the statues. This kind of lotus motif is very popular as a characteristic of the legacy of the Singosari kingdom.
Candi Jago has a length of 24 m with a width of 14 m and a temple height of 9.97 m. From the upper part of the temple, the surrounding area can be clearly seen. The author can imagine the area around the temple is a beautiful place with green trees.
This is a typical characteristic of a temple built in an area far from settlements. So that the royal elite who visited the temple could find solemnity.
Candi Jago has a terraced temple structure, there are 3 terraces that make up the temple. On each terrace there are reliefs depicting the stories of Kresnayana, Parthayana, Arjuna Wiwaha, Kuntjarakharna and Anglingdharma . To be able to follow the flow of the reliefs, you must start from the front and rotate in a clockwise direction.
Currently the government is starting to pay attention to historical sites including temples. The existence of the temple is very important for the younger generation to know to raise the spirit and fighting power, that their ancestors were tough and unyielding people.
