According to legend, the gods created Goddess Durga from their collective energy to defeat the buffalo demon Mahishasura, who had gained invincibility against male gods. Durga, with her ten arms, each holding a powerful weapon, fought Mahishasura for nine days and nights and finally killed him on the tenth day, symbolizing the victory of good over evil.
